Elizabeth Gray(Australia)
I remember Mino with great affection, both for the warmth and friendliness of the people who were involved with the Paper Art Village Project, particularly my host family, and also for an unforgettable three months. I loved the experience of living in a small town with such unique architecture, and proximity to the natural beauty of the Nagaragawa. I was amazed by the green of rice, the changing of the seasons, the daily activities of the town, access to many cultural experiences, and the pleasures of making paper. The studio provided me with a place and time to experiment with the properties of Japanese paper in my art. Best of all, I got to eat Japanese food every day.

Mino Art Paper Village comes to me in my dreams. I ride a bicycle across the river, I ride along the shore, I ride up the very steep hill to the temple of the Takahashi Family. I dream of the studio and the other artist, of the smell of the cold morning air and our visit to the schools. I loved my time in Mino and wish I could transport myself there for a visit with the families who cared for me so well. I try to think of ways to use the Mino Washi and I think of Mr. Haba and his family. I think of the rice fields and the food, the bakery, and the onsen, and Mr and Mrs. Watanabe and, of course, Mr and Mrs Takahashi., who were so kind and generous.

I have great memories from mino…Kaneko family there, who hosted me as part of their family from the beginning, the long conversations with all of them…the joy of the girls.. The town was some kind of dream where I felt free to do and act as I felt. I met there to Yasu and Danielle, great artist who I keep contact with. In my personal work this residency was very important because I developed a whole project and involved in my production to people from Mino. I just loved it!
