Zulay Herrera(Venezuela)
When I think of Mino, words such as dedication, development, growth, creation, harmony, art and family fill up my mind because that’s what the city emphasized in my life. Artists in Residence represented the opportunity to interact and share with masters of paper and artist from other countries, and completely dedicate myself to my work for three months. Still in my memory is the warmth of the people from the city of Mino, especially the Haba Family who welcomed us and adopted us into their family, giving us all the support we ever needed. They maintained essential communication tools of Japanese-English dictionary, patience, and the language of the heart. Furthermore, I can never forget the divine smell from nearby bakeries with freshly baked bread, kaki fruits, wet fiber and textures, different colored leaves, and the transparent waters of the rivers. Mino is truly a part of my heart.

My stay as an “artist in residence” in Mino City is my greatest artistic, cultural and human experience outside of France, my native country. I have enlarged my artistic palette with paper technique taught by attentive teachers. I have had the opportunity to interact with artists from Japan and many other countries, and be able to work and to exhibit my pieces in various places. This was already an invaluable opportunity, but above all, I learned a lot and enjoyed the lifestyle and culture of Japan I already knew a little. I have been allowed to come with my two sons, then my husband came to join us. We all have been welcomed very warmly. My sons, No.ANi (Noah in English) and Arthur, were 10 and 5 years old; They still keep a nostalgic memory of their experience in the city and the schools that hosted them. We all fell in love with traditional Japanese architecture, the food, the cooking and the atmosphere in the restaurants, the language, the landscapes that appears to be both wild and maintained… And last but not least, the friendship that we have tightened with many people in Mino. We are still in contact with some of them.
